Hazel eyes. I saw them in my dreams. But I didn't see them when I woke. I blinked, my eyelids fluttering as they opened. A heaviness weighed down on my chest. I tried to breathe, but the ache moved deeper until it was all I could feel. I tried to glance around the room and pushed up from the bed, but the movement made my head spin. I let out a moan that tore through the back of my throat. A burn followed, one that made me panic.

What happened? I tried to think, tried to remember where I was. Sparkling blue water came to me… The island. That's right, I was on Cosa Nostra Island.

"There you are, you’re finally awake."

I flinched at the voice. Footsteps echoed, filling the room, as the doctor walked around the partially closed curtain, lifted his gaze to mine, and smiled. "You gave me a scare there for a while."

"What happened to me?"

"You inhaled a short-acting barbiturate. Not enough to do any permanent damage, but it seemed to hit you pretty hard." He came closer, switching on a penlight to shine in my eyes before flicking it away. He grabbed his stethoscope, pressing the cool steel against my chest. "Deep breaths for me."

I did as he asked, even as it ached. He seemed concerned about something. "Is there something wrong?"

"With your health? No, not at all." He straightened, smiling down at me. "In fact, you're in perfect health, physically, that is. How much do you remember?"

That was just it, I didn't remember anything. I tried to think, but as soon as I did, the room started to spin once more. I lashed out, grabbing hold of the steel railing on the bed.

"Easy," the doctor cautioned, grabbing my shoulder. "Don’t push it, you’ve had a bit of a scare, so your brain is trying to protect you.”

A scare…

My breaths came hard and fast. I glanced down at the bed. "How long have I been here?"

"Not long, a few hours maybe."

Viktoriya? I searched the bed for my cell, but I couldn't see it anywhere. “My phone.”

"It's here," came a deep murmur as the most dangerously stunning male I'd ever seen strode around the curtain.

Hazel eyes…

That’s what I saw when he looked at me.

And that’s all I remembered, but with the memory came panic. My pulse boomed, the sound thrashing in my ears. He cut a glare at the doctor as the poor man stepped in front of me. “Alexi…”

“Save it, doc,” he muttered, flanked the doctor in one stride, and held out my phone to me.

I just looked at it. The screen was cracked.

“You dropped it,” he explained, shifting his weight from foot to foot nervously.

The doctor just scowled at him. "You shouldn't be here, Kilpatrick."

"Thank you," I murmured, taking the phone from him.

"Well…" the doctor muttered. "I need to do some final checks on Ms. Ivanov."

The heavy thud of boots rang out in the hallway, but I could hardly hear them over the sound of my heart. Alexi gave a nod and took a step backwards.
